Our Story

It was around the year 1924, the people in Sikkim then were simple and mostly busy with home and farm; a society unaware and untouched by the changes in the world. It was the time when Sikkimese women could not imagine life beyond their house and kitchen, our founder, Hon'ble Dr. Mary H Hepburne Scott responded to God's calling to work for the girl child of Sikkim and the selfless service that she offered to impart knowledge to them, gave her the joy of learning which in turn she got the immense contentment with the motto of “love Service and Joy”. Today the school strives to foster love of fellowship, aims to inculcate in each of its ward a feeling of service towards the society in large and there by spread the message of joy.

Paljor Namgyal Girls' School, a century-old institution in Gangtok, Sikkim, was founded by the Scottish missionary, Mary Scott, who established the "Mazhong Kothi" in the capital to educate local girls. Officially named on January 22, 1943, in honor of the Crown Prince Paljor Namgyal, the school received a new campus on land gifted by the royal family. Under the enduring motto of "Love, Service, Joy," the school has been a pioneer in women's education in the state, offering a holistic curriculum and providing foundational education for countless young women, while also adapting to modern educational guidelines and principles.

Our Philosophy

Paljor Namgyal Girls’ School follows a philosophy of balance—between academics and personal growth, tradition and modernity, discipline and creativity. Guided by its motto of love, service, and joy, the school emphasizes character building, values, and responsibility alongside academic achievement. It nurtures confidence, compassion, and respect, ensuring students grow with both knowledge and a strong moral compass. Rooted in Sikkim’s cultural heritage yet open to global perspectives, the school offers a holistic education through academics, arts, sports, and social responsibility.
